Snacky Mackies Winners

, part of 午夜剧场 UK & Ireland, has supported Mackie Academy鈥檚 鈥楽nacky Mackie鈥 initiative for a third consecutive year, with members of the company鈥檚 management and culinary teams helping the school鈥檚 students to design and market a tasty snack.

As part of their health and wellbeing (HWB) classes, the S1 students complete a module on the importance of nutrition. They are then tasked with working in teams to develop a snack recipe, as well as branding and marketing for their product.

Participants then present their concepts and their reasons for selecting particular ingredients to their peers and a team of ESS senior managers and culinary leads for judging.

The winning recipe from the latest cohort was the 鈥楤eet Bomb鈥 beetroot brownie, with previous winners including 鈥楴o Bake Peanut Oaties鈥, 鈥楤anana Bites鈥 and a 鈥楧ark Chocolate and Berry Bake鈥. These are subsequently prepared by chefs from the ESS Energy business and served to customers within the company鈥檚 on and offshore contracts, including at Aberdeen International Airport.

Students Benjamin and Nathan commented:

鈥淚 liked designing, it was fun. Making something was a bit different. We were nervous to present, but it was nice to work as a team. This was the first project we have done. We want to keep creating stuff as we find it fun.鈥

Students Rosie, Brooke, Suzy, and Georgia added:

鈥淚t was interesting learning about different micronutrients. We liked how we could just decide on our own. We like the bright colours of our logo and doing the research. We are proud of our final product. It was so cool to win!鈥

Niamh McGlynn, PE teacher, commented:

鈥淗ealth class really suits being delivered through project based learning and we鈥檝e realised so many interdisciplinary links and skills through the project. The pupils have been so motivated to do well. Even though only one group could win, they鈥檝e stayed engaged as they鈥檝e remained part of the process and developed teamwork, communication, and leadership!鈥

Ronnie Kelman, Managing Director 鈥 ESS Energy, Government & Infrastructure commented:

鈥淚 attended Mackie Academy, my children went to the school and we鈥檙e local to the area, so it鈥檚 great to have this partnership! We鈥檙e delighted to be working with the school, encouraging their young people to think about the importance of the food they eat and giving them an insight into working in the hospitality industry. I look forward to further opportunities for collaboration.鈥
